Retiring an email address? Move its recovery jobs first

Before an old inbox disappears, find the accounts that still depend on it.

An email address can have several jobs: receiving messages, identifying you at sign-in, and helping you recover other accounts. Changing the address on one profile does not necessarily change all three. Before you leave an old inbox behind, give those jobs a new home.

1. Make a short dependency list. Start with your password manager, main email, financial accounts, cloud storage, and social accounts. Check saved logins and search the old inbox for welcome messages and security alerts. Open each service directly rather than following an unexpected email link.

2. Check the separate fields. Look for sign-in email, contact email, and recovery email in each account. Google explicitly distinguishes these roles; some Google products still use the main account address even after you add a contact address. Choose a recovery inbox you control and actually check.

3. Confirm each change. Finish the service's verification step and make sure you can receive its messages at the new address. Keep your current signed-in session available while checking your access. If the old inbox belongs to a school or employer, ask its administrator when your access will end.

4. Review connected sign-ins. If you use Sign in with Google elsewhere, check that service's supported way to keep access before deleting the Google Account. Removing a Google sign-in link does not delete the separate service's data. Account closure and disconnecting a login are different actions with different consequences.

5. Leave time for the transition. Google says it may send verification codes to previous recovery information for seven days after a change. Check each provider's own rules; there is no universal waiting period that guarantees a smooth move.

Before deleting anything, save the data you need and read the exact deletion warning. Deleting Gmail and deleting an entire Google Account have different effects. If you cannot confirm a replacement route into an important account, resolve that first. A tidy inbox is less urgent than keeping access to your accounts.
